Additional Information:
An ex RAAF electronics technician, Jon Firth came to the world of art glass via a successful career in the licenced club industry in NSW.
He migrated north to Darwin in 1985 and set about completing his quest for knowledge about glass. In 1995 he travelled to France and the UK to investigate medieval and modern stained glass in the great cathedrals.
Before coming to Darwin Jon had been tutored in both stained glass and warm glass by well known Sydney glass artist Marc Grunseit. They remain close friends and colleagues. In the year 2000 Jon was engaged by Marc to assist on a project in Sydney.
Over the years Jon has executed many commissions for stained glass in both domestic and ecclesiastical environments. In 1990-91 he undertook the restoration of the major stained glass window 'Star of the Sea' in St Mary's Cathedral in Darwin.
He has designed and executed windows for the chapels of all three armed services in the Top End, the most recent being windows for the Lone Pine Chapel at Robertson Barracks in Palmerston.
His kiln formed work is widely accepted and sold through galleries all over Australia. On several occasions he has been commissioned by the NT Government to design and make glassware to be given as gifts to visiting dignitaries.
He is the NT representative of Ausglass (Australian Glass Artists Association), he is also a professional associate of Craft Australia and Craft Mark accredited, by them. He is also authorized to display the NT Made logo by the NT Government. Presently Jon is the chairman of Darwin Division of Territory Craft and was most recently appointed Acting President of the peak body. He is a foundation member of the MG Car Club of the NT and serves on that committee as well.
